The W.K. Kellogg Foundation announces publication of its 2011 annual report, entitled “Who Knows What: Understanding Vulnerable Children.”
The curated, newspaper-style report features many of the community voices that surround and know something about vulnerable children: a teacher, banker, grandmother, chief of pediatrics, businessman, mother, child policy advocate, food services director and more.
“There is much to be learned and shared from those who surround children in communities,” said Joanne Krell, vice president for communications at the Kellogg Foundation.
“At the heart of the Kellogg Foundation’s work is respect for the people who comprise a community and belief in the value of their insights and collective wisdom. By capturing voices representing the ‘community’ surrounding a vulnerable child, this report seeks to share that wisdom, acknowledge that respect, and illustrate the reasons for it,” added Krell.
The report also includes forward-looking messages on the state of the foundation and the field from President and CEO Sterling Speirn and Board Chair Fred Keller; financial reports, and summaries of grantmaking investments for each program area.
Grantmaking at a glance
During the past fiscal year (Sept. 1, 2010, through Aug. 31, 2011), the foundation made $306 million in new grantmaking commitments.
In its home state of Michigan, the foundation made new grantmaking commitments of $83 million, with $19.5 million of that committed to its hometown of Battle Creek, Mich.
For its other priority places in the United States, the foundation made new grantmaking commitments of $20 million in Mississippi; $17 million in New Mexico; $12 million in New Orleans. International grantmaking commitments totaled $14 million.
