Johanns releases wish list from thousands of suggestions for farm programs

As the USDA prepares an overhaul of farm programs next year, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns traveled the United States in a nationwide series of forums to listen to farmers. On Wednesday, Johanns issued an exhaustive summary of the comments, more than 4,000 in all. Comments and summaries are available on the department’s Web site, http://www.usda.gov. The government expects to spend $20 billion subsidizing farmers this year. Johanns said about 92 percent of subsidy payments to go farmers who grow corn, soybeans, cotton, rice and wheat. Spending on conservation programs is expected to be $4 billion.
