Nutrition upgrade urged for federal food program

Now, the only fresh vegetables available through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) are carrots, and then only for breastfeeding mothers. Vouchers based on 30-year-old nutrition standards steer women toward sugar-laden fruit juices and refined-flour products. They’re encouraged to drink milk, though many are allergic.
