An Opportunity for For-Profit Social Entrepreneurs in Food and Organics

Investors’ Circle National Conference and Venture Fair
The Boston Hyatt, Boston, MA
November 1-3, 2005

The Investors’ Circle National Conference is the meeting place for angel investors, professional venture capitalists, philanthropic investors and entrepreneurs who are using private capital to promote the transition to a sustainable future.  Our 2004 Conference drew 350 attendees including over 150 investors.

With support from the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, Health Care Without Harm, and the Phoebe Haas Charitable Trust, we will focus on the following four tracks: renewable energy, food/organics, health, and media. We are also very grateful to the Skoll Foundation for their support of the conference.

The venture fair (Nov. 2nd) will feature presentations from up to 40 companies that are working to deliver commercial solutions to social and environmental problems.  We encourage for-profit companies who are dedicated to organics, local food systems, and/or sustainable agriculture to apply to present.  Examples of companies that have presented in the past and have received investments from our members include:

  • Farmers’ Diner: A restaurant and meat processing facility in Vermont dedicated to sourcing food from within 50 miles.

  • Niman Ranch: Purveyor of gourmet, sustainably-produced beef and pork.  The company is dedicated to humane animal husbandry and sources its pork from a farmer-owned subsidiary in Iowa.

  • Organic Bouquet: Wholesale and mail order brand for organic flowers.

  • Pura Vida Coffee: Supplier of fair trade, organic, shade-grown coffee.  The company is 100% charitably owned and helps at-risk children and families in coffee-growing countries.

The educational portion of this year’s conference (Nov. 3rd) will feature speakers and panels on the state of double bottom line investing and enterprise creation in these four focus sectors, as well as general sessions on the stakeholder capitalism movement.  This portion of the event is open to the public.
