Public Space for Public Good: The Grand Rapids Central Station Early Childhood Center

Reimagining early care in Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids Central Station Early Childhood Center is one of the country’s first early care facilities built inside a public transit hub. Housed in 12,000 square feet of space that had long sat vacant, the center will serve 100 children, from infancy through preschool.

The center lowers common barriers that prevent families from accessing care, such as high costs, limited local availability and transportation. Through its location in the heart of Grand Rapids’ transit hub, the center will meet families where they’re at, letting caregivers drop off and pick up their kids on the way to work, school or home.

The story

A local need and a local solution

In 2023, The Rapid, Grand Rapids’ regional transit authority, surveyed nearly 500 Grand Rapids transit riders with children. It confirmed what many had long suspected: families needed childcare reachable without a car.

More than 70%

of those surveyed said they’d enroll their child in a center located in a transit hub

94% said access

to transportation was important to their family

An unlikely but perfect partnership

Bringing the center to life took an unlikely but perfect partnership. The coalition united philanthropy, government, education and transit around a shared goal: giving Grand Rapids children a strong start, right where families already are.

No single partner could have built Grand Rapids Central Station Early Childhood Center center alone. It took The Rapid opening up prime real estate in its downtown hub, the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids serving as the lead developer and operator, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) ensuring funding and convening support and Grand Rapids Public Schools and Head Start for Kent County providing publicly funded slots so that a family’s ability to pay never determines the quality of care their child receives.
