Fighting stereotypes and invisibility
Alex Nogales' work seeks to show America the true promise of the Hispanic community
Alex Nogales is doing something about the injustice he sees directed at Hispanic Americans.
He is advocating for telecommunications policies that benefit the Latino community.
He is creating work opportunities in the world of media for Latinos because their advancement as professionals has a positive impact on the Hispanic community.
And he is fighting negative stereotypes of Latinos because he knows that “how you are perceived is always going to be how you are treated.”
If there is a sense of urgency in Alex’s voice when he speaks it is because he knows the challenges Hispanics face in this country. During his decade-plus career as a television producer, he saw very few positive representations of Latinos in the media. That invisibility—something experienced by other communities of color—all too often means that Latinos are not considered when policies ranging from education to health to the economy are being decided.
“Right now, Latinos are not being treated very well across the nation. We must be immediate. We must put our imprint there. We must show other people who we really are, what we bring to the table.”
