Access to quality education

Jason D. Lee of the Detroit Area Pre College Engineering Program helps students to develop the motivation and awareness of skills necessary for academic achievement and successful careers

Whether it’s in Southeast Michigan or someplace else around the country, wherever he goes, Detroit Area Pre College Engineering Program (DAPCEP)’s executive director, Jason D. Lee runs into former students who rave about the positive effect the program had on their lives. While there are countless success stories, Jason remembers one in particular that left a lasting impression.

While participating in a DAPCEP summer academic program in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, one young student saw the beach for the first time with profound personal effect.

“She said she would never forget that experience,” Jason said. “Even though it’s not an academic impact, it really opened her world up beyond her neighborhood within the city of Detroit.”

Over the past 35 years, DAPCEP has impacted the lives of more than 150,000 metropolitan Detroit youth through intensive and highly motivational programs facilitated on university and corporate campuses. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation partners with DAPCEP to support its efforts to prepare students for success in the classroom and in life in order to build a stronger community – both locally and statewide.

“I believe in a Michigan where all young people have access to a quality education, where parents believe that a college degree is not only essential in a child’s development, but is something that every child should obtain and should achieve,” Jason said.
