Project Name:

20th Annual JuneteenthOhio Festival

Project Summary:

The 20th Annual JuneteenthOhio Festival is the largest and longest running African American Celebration in Central Ohio. The African American Independence Day,  it is held on the same date when President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. A weekend of cultural discovery, at least 80,000 festival goers from all cultural backgrounds come out to enjoy good music, ethnic food, and family fun.

This three-day festival celebrates the positive contributions African Americans have made in America, re-educating the public and to dispel racial myths and distorted history among the diverse population in attendance. For the past 20 years, traditional activities have included Buffalo soldiers re-enactments, black inventor exhibits, a health and wellness pavilion featuring workshops and health screenings, an Underground Rail Road Journey for children – in addition to entertainment by national recording artists, local bands, and performers from various cultural backgrounds. The festival encourages young people of other cultures to experience the authentic, rich culture of African Americans – and seeks funding in support of organization costs.
