Communities of color suffer from dysfunctional behaviors and relationships, the difficulty of trust and interdependency and collaboration, due to the historical effects of structural racism and the subsequent effects of internalized racism. In an effort to mitigate and reduce these effects, the Association House of Chicago (AHC) will implement the Live Life in Color (LLIC) Coach Training Program to help “re-culture” people of color, delivering coaching training to front line staff, supervisors and leaders. This experiential coach training model has proven to equip trainees with a highly transformative skill set, and proven to create sustainable behavior change in the low income and vulnerable communities.

Addresses the effects of structural and internalized racism in communities of color, the key program elements will include: a focus on long term outcomes; an ongoing, systematic collaborative process in assisting clients to change behaviors; support to practice new behaviors; and building skills and teaching content based on AHC’s unique needs and goals. The weeklong training will give trainees an overview of the Racial Healing Coaching process, including workshop and other media. Activities will include: experiential, high-impact skill training that can be applied immediately; visioning, rapport building, and activated listening; discussions on topics such as limiting beliefs, Victim Talk, The Cycles of Conditioning, internalized racism theory; and goal setting, game planning and concrete and creative tools for facilitating and sustaining action and momentum.
