Project Name:

Congregations for Racial Healing

Project Summary:

The goal of this initiative is to realize greater racial equity for children by promoting measurable racial healing initially through the cooperation of 20 congregations with balanced representation from Hispanic, African American and European American congregations. A nationwide collaboration of urban and suburban congregations, all will undergo a cultural competency assessment of their congregations, followed by training and racial healing workshops explore ways to pursue partnerships that will incorporate racial equity in their services, programs and outreach. These new, strong, culturally competent relationships both internally and externally among the participating congregations will be the basis of creating a racial equity plan to improve communication and partnership with local human service agencies and neighborhood organizations. Finally, congregations will commit to and implement services to realize measurable, institutionalized gains in racial equity in order that vulnerable children and families can succeed – such as United Way's Schools of Hope in-school and after-school reading and family literacy programs.
