The purpose of the Bay Area Black United Fund project is to promote racial healing and mitigate the effects of structural racism impacting African American boys and adolescent males most affected by the mental health crisis. By providing for the inter-generational transfer of culturally-rooted wisdom and wealth, the project will establish cumulative pathways to support African American male development – from childhood through manhood.
Key project activities will include building an inter-generational community of African American male leadership to support boys and young men; asset mapping of community organizations in East and West Oakland that especially serve this population; strengthening giving and institutional philanthropy to fund organizations serving African American youth and young men; and developing a school-based and rites of passage curriculums. Targeted media and campaigns for public policy reform will also support the health, wellbeing and racial healing for this vulnerable population of children.
