Working with Sycamore High School in suburban Cincinnati, Ohio, this project will help Asian students who are vulnerable due to low self-esteem and who are bullied by other students because of their Asian heritage. Asian youth will be trained in how to deal with these situations; Asian parents who tend to demand too much of their children will be addressed; as well as students who have conflicts with Asian students because they were never given a chance to understand Asian cultures.
In an effort to decrease existing ethnic problems on campus, the project will develop two interactive workshops using a variety of media including interactive activities, video clips, and discussions through which participants will gain an understanding of the impact of ethnicity and culture on interpersonal relations. In targeting members of the Greater Cincinnati community, project learning objectives will also include: awareness of multicultural communication skills; deeper understanding of the influence of ethnicity and culture in guiding behavior throughout development; awareness of ethical and practical reasons for assuring culturally sensitive services; and incorporation of culturally competent practices into every day interactions.
