Standing Rock Sioux Tribe releases micro-doc exploring efforts to protect water resources and sacred tribal land

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe announced yesterday the release of Mni Wiconi: The Stand at Standing Rock, a new, 10-minute film that explores the nearly eight-month battle to stop construction of the pipeline on sacred tribal lands.

Mni Wiconi – Lakota for water is life – powerfully shares the effort of water protectors and allies to hold ceremonial prayer and peaceful protest; to protect sacred land; to defend tribal way of life and tribal land; and to fight back against centuries of Native oppression.

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman David Archambault II shares in the film: “This is a historic moment in time, first time ever in United States where over 300 tribes have congregated to stand in solidarity and unite in prayer.”

Mni Wiconi was created by Divided Films and directed by Lucian Read, with Karim Hajj, and has its origins in America Divided, a WKKF-supported eight-part docu-series that promotes authentic and inclusive narratives to shift the national discourse and the perceptions that contribute to the racial disparities in health, education and economic security for children and families. Using stories investigated by high-profile celebrity correspondents from diverse backgrounds to bring communities together (#StoriesUniteUs), America Divided premiered in September on EPIX.
