Nation’s Volunteer Leaders Gather to Launch New Era of Service

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation announced a $1.6 million investment to leverage activities related to United We Serve, President Obama’s call to service challenging all Americans to help lay a new foundation for growth by engaging in sustained, meaningful community service. United We Serve began June 22nd and will run through the National Day of Service and Remembrance September 11th.

First Lady Michelle Obama and California’s First Lady Maria Shriver kicked off the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service June 22nd – 24th in San Francisco, CA.  It was the world’s largest gathering of volunteer and service leaders from the nonprofit, government, and corporate sectors. The conference will officially launch President Obama’s United We Serve nationwide service initiative.

“Investing in United We Serve is an opportunity to align our work with Congress and the new administration,” said Sterling Speirn, the foundation’s president and chief executive officer.  “It will allow us to leverage resources and strengthen our place-based partnerships.”
