  • What are your grant-making guidelines?

    Answer:

In general, we do not provide funding for the operational phases of established programs, capital requests (which include the construction, purchase, renovation and/or furnishing of facilities), equipment, conferences and workshops, scholarships or tuition assistance, films, television and/or radio programs, endowments, development campaigns or research/studies unless they are an integral part of a larger program budget being considered for funding. We do fund projects that align with our strategic framework.

  • What is the Kellogg Foundation’s purpose?

    Answer:

Our mission statement reads, “We support children, families and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society." Everything we do is in the service of that goal.

  • What do you mean by the term "vulnerable children"?

    Answer:

Vulnerable children are the nearly 30 million children* in the United States growing up in families that can't make ends meet--those on the bottom rung of the economic ladder.  In addition to poverty, these children face at least one other compounding factor, such as race, ethnicity, or a household headed by a single mother.  They tend to live in urban and rural communities largely segregated by economics, class and color.  Typically, they are children who end up on the lowest tier of every available indicator, from health to education to nutrition.

  • How can budget information/attachments be included with an initial application?

    Answer:

Budgets are submitted as part of the online process. If we are interested in seeing further development of a submission, the grant-seeker will have an opportunity to provide additional information, including a detailed budget for the portion of the activity that the foundation may be funding.

  • When are your proposal submission deadlines?

    Answer:

We have none. We accept and review grant applications throughout the year.

  • What is the source of that goal?

    Answer:

Our founder, Will Keith Kellogg, donated most of his fortune to establish the foundation. We respect his intention and direction to "use the money as you please so long as it promotes the health, happiness and well-being of children."

  • How do I apply for a grant?

Answer: The grant application process is similar to what it has been in the past, although we have made some changes. Since December 2008, we have required that all proposals be submitted through the initial submission process on our website. This ensures that we collect consistent information from all applications, and it allows us to learn from both those who receive funding, and those who do not. Further, the online submission process helps us better track all requests, and ensure that grant-seekers receive a response in a timely manner.

  • Why not focus on children in general?

    Answer:

We believe that all children are society's assets.  Unfortunately, too often, vulnerable children are treated not as assets to be developed, but as problems to be solved.   We are unwilling to accept a second-class future for these children, and we are unwilling to accept the societal risk of ignoring their potential.  We want to help today's vulnerable children reshape tomorrow's society in positive, productive ways.  We see this as consistent with the wishes of our founder.
